Finding a club or raceHow-to

Find a race or event near you this month, with the weather

By livedotUpdated 5 min read

The short answer

Ask livedot in ChatGPT or Claude for races near a place and month, such as "trail runs near Cape Town in November", and add your club's page and local calendars. Then ask about a race by name: within 10 days you get the forecast along the course at the times you'll be there; further out, 10 years of weather on that date, labelled as history.

Picking a race this month comes down to three questions: what's on near me, can I do it, and what will the weather do? This guide covers asking by place in ChatGPT or Claude, the other places to look, and checking a race's weather on the course with livedot. It's one of livedot's guides to finding a club or race.

Where can I find races near me this month?

Ask by place, then start close to home.

  • Ask livedot in ChatGPT or Claude. "Trail runs near Cape Town in November", "cycle tours around Johannesburg" or "races near me this weekend" (more below).
  • Your club's page. Clubs on Windline and RunFast put their races on it, with dates and start times.
  • Organisers' pages at livedot.me. An organiser's page shows its upcoming events, races and tours, with dates and distances.
  • Local race calendars and running or cycling federations in your country.
  • Friends who race, and the local running or bike shop.
Two panels. Ask by name: questions about a race by its name, which livedot answers from the public pages on Windline and RunFast. Ask by place: questions about clubs and events near a place, which livedot answers with a list, with Join or I'm in
By name, and by place and month.

How do I find a race and check its weather?

Ask by place, then by name. The steps:

  1. Make a shortlist

Ask livedot in ChatGPT or Claude for races near you this month, then add your club's page, local race calendars and friends who race. Note each race's date, how far away it is and when entries close.

  2. Add livedot

In ChatGPT or Claude, search for livedot and add it, or add it by its address, https://livedot.me/mcp. The weather needs no sign-in.

  3. Ask about each race by name

"What's the weather for the Gravel Burn?" livedot answers for races it knows, and says so when it doesn't know one.

  4. Compare, then enter

Weigh the distance, the course, the travel and what the weather usually does on that date, then enter on the organiser's own page.

Setup for every chat app is at livedot.me/mcp.

What does the weather answer show?

The weather where you'll be, when you'll be there: within 10 days of the start, the live forecast (Apple Weather) along the course, timed to the field and rated Good, Fair or Tough; further out, 10 years of weather on that date (Copernicus ERA5), labelled as history. For a ride that means the headwind stretches; for a run, the heat at a runner's pace. Every kind of answer is in race-day weather with ChatGPT or Claude.

Which races does livedot know by name?

Public ones, from four places:

SourceExample
livedot's race weather previewsThe NYC Marathon, the Gravel Burn
Races on organisers' and clubs' pages on Windline and RunFastFrom 14 days before the start
Published Windline toursBy the tour's name, address or organiser
The demo races, while the apps run themThe Comrades (running) and the Coast Classic (cycling)

If a race isn't there, livedot says so and doesn't guess. For any other route, attach its GPX and say when you'll start: livedot gives the weather along it at your pace, with no account.

How do I choose between two races?

Compare what you can control with what you can't. Distance and course you choose; the weather you can only plan for.

QuestionHow to answer it
Can I finish it?Your longest recent run or ride, against the race distance and climbing
Will it be hot?The race's weather: the forecast in race week, history before that
Is the wind a factor? On a ride, where the headwind stretches fall on the course
When do entries close? The organiser's own page
Can I get there?Start time, travel and where to stay

A race that's usually hot on a course with no shade is a different race from the same distance on a cool morning. History tells you what's typical; the forecast opens 10 days out.

What should I do in race week?

Check the weather again, once a day. The forecast opens 10 days before the start and firms up as the day gets closer, so the answer on Monday can differ from the one on Thursday.

  • Ten days out: the first forecast replaces history. Look at the rating and the reason.
  • Three days out: decide what to wear and carry, and whether to start steadier in the heat.
  • The evening before: ask once more, and check the organiser's page for any change to the start time.

On race day, the same people who helped you choose can follow you. Go live from the RunFast or Windline app and send them your link: see how to go live on race day. They can ask livedot where you are, in their own words.

What about my own route?

Ask about that too. Attach the GPX, or a Ride with GPS link, and say when you'll start: "What's the wind on this on Saturday at 7?" livedot answers with the weather along it at your pace, and a flyover of the route, coloured by the weather. It publishes nothing and needs no account. Strava links don't work here.

What does a list of races show?

Ask "trail runs near Cape Town in November", "cycle tours around Johannesburg" or "races near me this weekend", and livedot in ChatGPT or Claude lists published, public events near that place, soonest first. Each shows its date, where it starts and how far away it is, the forecast (or typical weather further out), its club or organiser, and an I'm in button to its page on Windline or RunFast. Say "only races" or "only tours" to narrow it, and how far you'll travel. It lists events, never people.

Is it free?

Yes. livedot, Windline and RunFast are free for everyone, thanks to ProLend. Get the app for race day: RunFast for running, Windline for cycling.

Questions

How do I find races near me this month?

Ask livedot in ChatGPT or Claude for races near a place and month, such as "trail runs near Cape Town in November": it lists published, public events near there, soonest first, with how far away each is and its weather. Your club's page and local race calendars help too.

Can ChatGPT tell me the weather for a race?

Yes, with livedot added, for races it knows: livedot's race previews, races on organisers' and clubs' pages on Windline and RunFast from 14 days before the start, published Windline tours and, while the apps run them, the demo races. Within 10 days it's the forecast along the course; further out, 10 years of history.

How far ahead is the race forecast?

10 days. Before that, livedot shows 10 years of weather on that date (Copernicus ERA5), labelled as history, not a forecast.

What if livedot doesn't know my race?

It says so rather than guessing. For your own route, attach the GPX and ask for the weather at your start time: livedot times it to your pace.
