Ask AI: what will the weather be for the Comrades?
The short answer
The 2027 Comrades is on Sunday 13 June 2027, a Down Run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. No forecast reaches that far: forecasts open about 10 days out, around 3 June 2027. Until then, the honest answer is history, what race day has brought in past years, which RunFast's Map your run shows today for 2015 to 2024, at your pace.
It's one of the first things a Comrades runner asks, months before June: what will the weather be like? Ask an AI assistant and you'll get an answer of some kind. This guide explains what an honest answer looks like this far out, what ChatGPT and Claude say with livedot connected, and where to find the real numbers: past race days now, and the forecast once it exists.
When is the 2027 Comrades?
Sunday 13 June 2027. It's the 100th edition, and a Down Run: from Pietermaritzburg City Hall to Kings Park in Durban, with the start at 05:00. The organisers announced it in The Greatest Story Ever Run, and give the distance as about 91 km, to be confirmed once the course is formally measured.
That date is the whole answer to the weather question, for now. It's months away.
Can anyone forecast the weather for June?
No. Weather forecasts reach about 10 days ahead with any skill. Beyond that, a day-by-day forecast is a guess dressed up as a number.
For the Comrades, that means:
| When | What's possible | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Now until about 2 June 2027 | History: what race day has brought in past years | RunFast's Map your run, Race days |
| From about 3 June 2027 | The live forecast, timed to each stretch at your pace | RunFast, and ChatGPT or Claude with livedot once the race is on livedot |
| On race day | Where your runner is, and the heat where they are | RunFast's live page, livedot.me, ChatGPT or Claude |
History isn't a forecast, and it says so. It tells you the odds: how cold the start has been, how hot the afternoon got, how often the wind was in the runners' faces. That's what you need for training and kit, months out.
What do ChatGPT and Claude say now?
With livedot added in ChatGPT or Claude (search for livedot; see how to check race-day weather with ChatGPT or Claude for the setup), the answer depends on how you ask:
- "What will the weather be for the Comrades?" returns the Comrades demo: RunFast's demo race, which runs every day on a course from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. The answer is clearly labelled "Comrades Marathon (demo)", with today's date and today's forecast. It shows what a race-week answer will look like, not June.
- "What will the weather be for the Comrades 2027?" gets a plain "I don't have that on livedot yet", with what it can answer instead.
Neither one forecasts June, because nothing can. Without a weather tool connected, an assistant can only answer from what it already knows about Durban in June, which isn't the course, the hour or your pace.

What's the difference between a forecast and history?
A forecast is a prediction for one day; history is what many days have actually brought. livedot keeps them apart in every answer.
| Forecast | History | |
|---|---|---|
| How far ahead | Up to 10 days | Any date |
| Source | Apple Weather | Copernicus ERA5 weather records |
| What it says | What should happen on this day | What usually happens on this date |
| Rain, for example | "About 1.4 mm of rain from km 39" | "Rain on about 3 days in 10" |
| Labelled | "Forecast from Apple Weather, timed to the course" | "Based on 10 years of weather on this date … not a forecast" |
Both are timed to the course: each stretch is read at the hour runners get there. That matters at an ultra like the Comrades. A 05:00 start is in the dark and cool; a runner finishing in the afternoon meets a very different day from the leaders.
Here is what a history answer looks like for a race livedot has, the NYC Marathon, asked weeks out:

Where can I see past Comrades race days now?
In RunFast's Map your run, on the web. It has past Comrades race days built in.
- Open Map your run on runfast.tech.
- Open the Comrades and choose Race days.
- Pick a year from 2015 to 2024 and set your pace.
You see the real weather that day, hour by hour, at the time you'd have reached each stretch: the heat, the humidity and the wind, and how much it would have cost you in minutes. Try a few years at your own pace; the spread tells you more than any average. RunFast's help explains it in race-day weather history.
What happens when the forecast opens?
From about 3 June 2027, the forecast takes over. In RunFast, set your start and your pace, and every kilometre is timed to you, with the heat stress and the weather cost along the way.
In ChatGPT or Claude, the same question returns the forecast for the race once it's on livedot, timed to the course and labelled "Forecast from Apple Weather". Ask again each day: forecasts sharpen as the day gets closer, and the answer says how recent its forecast is.
And on race day?
Ask where your runner is. With livedot in ChatGPT or Claude, "Where's Megan in the Comrades?" returns her km, her pace, how she's doing against her goal, the heat where she is and on the road ahead, and her finish time, with a live map. See how to track a runner live in ChatGPT, or the full guide to tracking a runner in a marathon.
To see it before June, the Comrades demo runs every day. Ask "Fly the Comrades" for the course from the air, or "Where's Megan in the Comrades demo?" for a runner mid-race.
Questions
When is the 2027 Comrades Marathon?
Sunday 13 June 2027, the 100th edition, a Down Run from Pietermaritzburg City Hall to Kings Park in Durban. The organisers give the distance as about 91 km, to be confirmed once the course is measured.
When will there be a real forecast for the Comrades?
From about 10 days before the start, around 3 June 2027. That's as far as Apple Weather's forecast reaches. Before then, any answer is history or a guess, and livedot only gives history, labelled as such.
What happens if I ask ChatGPT or Claude now?
With livedot, "Weather for the Comrades" returns the Comrades demo, labelled (demo), with today's forecast on the demo course. "Comrades 2027" gets a plain answer that livedot doesn't have that race yet. Neither pretends to forecast June.
Where can I see past Comrades race-day weather?
In RunFast's Map your run on the web: open the Comrades, choose Race days, pick a year from 2015 to 2024 and set your pace. It shows the real weather that day, hour by hour, at the time you'd have reached each stretch.
Is the Comrades usually hot?
It can be cold at the 05:00 start and warm by the afternoon, and how much heat you meet depends on your pace. Look at past race days at your own pace in Map your run rather than at an average for the city.
