Two Oceans Marathon 2027 weather: what race day will likely feel like
The short answer

The 2027 Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathon is on Sunday 4 April: 56 km round the Cape Peninsula, from Newlands down Main Road to Muizenberg and Fish Hoek, over Chapman's Peak to Hout Bay, and back over Constantia Nek to the finish at UCT. Here's what race day has usually felt like, section by section, for a runner in the middle of the field.
What will the weather be like at the 2027 Two Oceans Marathon?
Usually mild, humid and breezy: a pleasant start, then a warm, sticky last 15 km. In the records, a runner from the 06:00 start set off at about 16° and finished at about 19°, with a dew point near 14°. RunFast's engine rated race day Good on 1 day in 10, Fair on 8 and Tough on 1.
The heat stress (WBGT, the number race medical teams use) was usually about 20°. It reached Moderate or more on about 8 days in 10, and High on about 1. The warmest race day in the records reached 24°.

Where does the weather usually cost runners time?
The heat and the wind, about equally. On the middle day of the records, the weather cost a 6:42-per-km runner about 11 minutes over the whole race, and 15 minutes or more on 1 day in 10. The heat was the main cause on about 5 of those days in 10.

Each stretch is coloured by how hard the weather made it at 6:42 per km, at the hour a runner from the 06:00 start gets there, on the middle day of the records around 4 April, 2015 to 2024 (Historic). The numbers are the seven sections below.
Weather: contains modified Copernicus Climate Change Service information (ERA5). Course line: drawn along the roads of the organiser's route map, from © OpenStreetMap contributors. Map: OpenFreeMap, © OpenMapTiles, © OpenStreetMap contributors.
Orange for the first 15 km, down Main Road and along False Bay, where the south-easter is in runners' faces: on a middle day each stretch is about 3 to 3.5% slower. Mostly green from Kommetjie Road over Chapman's Peak, with the wind usually behind. Then orange again for the last 15 km, from Hout Bay up to Constantia Nek and down to the finish, about 4 to 6% slower, as the morning warms and the air stays humid. The wind usually comes from the south-east at 16 to 22 km/h. The course turns through almost every direction as it goes round the peninsula, so it's in runners' faces down Main Road and along False Bay to Fish Hoek, behind them on Kommetjie Road and over Chapman's Peak, and more often behind than against on the run in from Constantia Nek to UCT.
What is each section likely to feel like?

What should runners wear and pack for race day?
Light kit for 16–19°, a layer for the wait, and the organiser's compulsory kit. The organiser's Ultra Marathon page has the start batches, the compulsory kit, the 19 hydration stations and the cut-offs. From the weather records:
- A throwaway layer for the start. Runners load into their batches well before 06:00, and it was about 16° during the wait, 14° or colder on 1 morning in 10.
- Race kit for 16–19°. It starts in the dark and finishes late morning.
- Something for Chapman's Peak. The south-easter, about 22 km/h there, was mostly behind runners on about 6 days in 10, but its gusts reach about 30 km/h.
- A cap and sunscreen on clear days. Heat stress reached Moderate or more on about 8 days in 10, mostly on the climb from Hout Bay to Constantia Nek and the run to the finish, after about 10:30. Check the organiser's guidance on the day.
The final cut-off is 7 hours from the gun of the last batch, and official timing is gun-to-mat from your own batch. South Africa has no daylight saving, so every time is South African Standard Time.
When does the real forecast open?
Ten days before the race, in the RunFast app: on 25 March 2027. Load the course with your own pace and batch, and RunFast shows the heat and the wind at each stretch as you get there. From then on, trust the forecast over this preview.
How did we work this out?
The course was run again on every day from a week before to a week after 4 April, in each year from 2015 to 2024: 150 days. Each run started at the race's 06:00, South African Standard Time, at a steady 6:42 per km, on that day's hourly Copernicus ERA5 weather, with its dew point and sunshine. RunFast's engine, the same one the app uses, worked out the heat stress and the weather's toll, and rated the run and each section. The start-area wait is the lowest temperature between 04:00 and the start, and a wet day has 1 mm of rain or more. Where ERA5's hourly temperature and dew point step every three hours (its weather stations there report every three hours), they're read at 00, 03, … 21 UTC and joined in straight lines, as Windline's route pages read them.
ERA5's grid cells are about 25 km across, and a few cover the whole peninsula, some of them partly over the sea. The mountain, the cliffs of Chapman's Peak, sea breezes and shelter don't show. The course line follows the roads on the organiser's 2026 Ultra route map (the 2027 map isn't published yet), so it's close to the course but not the organiser's own file. Historic weather, not a forecast.
