Live tracking for clubs: your members on one race-day map

By livedotUpdated 6 min read

The short answer

Add the race to your club in Windline or RunFast. Members tap I'm riding (Windline) or I'm in (RunFast), set their own live tracking and go live on the day. The club's race map shows every member who chose to be seen, by distance, and supporters open one link in any browser. Clubs get a page through livedot's form.

When half the club is riding the same sportive, or running the same marathon, supporters don't want ten links. They want one map with everyone on it. That's the club's race map: every member who's racing and chose to be seen, live, with a list of who's furthest along. This guide covers setting it up, who's on it, and what supporters see.

What does a club get on race day?

One link that shows the club's members on the course, live, with the weather where each one is.

  • A live map of the club's members who are racing and live, each with their own dot or photo, refreshed every 10 seconds.
  • A list by distance: You follow first on Windline, then Furthest along. On RunFast, Furthest along, Yet to start and finishers.
  • Before the start (RunFast): Who's in, each with their goal and their own words, and a countdown such as "Gun in 2 h 05 min".
  • The whole race: on Windline, All riders switches to the race's own live map, with everyone on the race who's Findable.
  • Find by name: a box to pick out one member.
  • Finishers stay on the map for 6 hours, with their time.

How do I set it up?

The club adds the race; each member does their own live tracking. Here's the whole sequence.

  1. Get your club's page

Ask for a page with livedot's Get your page form. A person replies by email and sets it up with you, with an address at livedot.me.

  2. Add the race to the club

A club manager adds it with its route, date and start or gun time: in the club dashboard on the web for Windline, or Add a run or race, then Race, on RunFast.

  3. Members say they're racing

Each member taps I'm riding (Windline) or I'm in (RunFast) on the race, on the club's page or in the app.

  4. Members set their own live tracking

Each one opens Your goal and live tracking on the race: their link, who can see them, Findable by anyone, and a goal time if they want one.

  5. Share the club's race map

Post the club's race-map link in the club's group chat on race morning, so supporters can watch everyone from one place.

  6. Members go live at the start

Each member taps Go live and Start live tracking on their phone. They appear on the club's map as they go.

Managers who are racing tap I'm riding or I'm in like everyone else.

Who's on the club's race map?

Members who said they're racing, went live, and chose to be seen. The two apps differ on what "chose to be seen" means.

Tell your members which setting puts them on the map, a few days before the race, not on the morning. Members who leave themselves off are still followed by the people they sent their link to.

Where is the club's race map?

On the club's page, and at its own address. Share whichever is easiest.

  • Windline: on the club in the app, Who's where on the race. On the web, windline.tech/live/club/ and the club's name.
  • RunFast: on the club's page (runfast.tech/c/ and the club's name), Live map → under the race, or Watch live on race day. In the apps, on the club's screen.
  • livedot.me: the club's page at livedot.me and its name shows what's live, what's next and what's been, and Watch live opens the race map.

What should each member do before the race?

Five things, ideally the day before. Post this list in the club's group chat.

  1. Install the app and sign in: Windline for cycling, RunFast for running, on Android today from windline.tech/android or runfast.tech/android.
  2. Say they're racing: I'm riding or I'm in on the club's race.
  3. Set their own live tracking: Your goal and live tracking on the race, with a goal time if they want a ghost.
  4. Choose to be on the map: Findable by anyone, or, on Windline, My club's members.
  5. Check their phone: a full battery, and on Android, battery use set to Unrestricted. See the race-day phone checklist.

Do members keep their privacy?

Yes. The club owns the race; each member owns their dot, their goal and who sees them. They can stop at any time, and nobody sees an email address or a phone number. More in live tracking privacy.

What if a member can't race after all?

They take themselves off the list. On Windline, they tap Riding on the race to come off it, and if they're live on it, their live tracking for the race stops too. On RunFast, they tap ⋯ on the race in Runs and choose I'm out: the race comes off their runs, and their live tracking for it turns off. They can tap I'm in again any time before the race.

What happens after the race?

The race stays on the club's page all day, so the map can still be reached. The day after, it moves to the club's Past list; on Windline, that's the club's last 12 races and rides, with how many rode. Each member's own time and taps on the back are under Past in their app.

How do we make race morning easy for supporters?

Do the work the night before, so nobody's hunting for links at 6 am.

  1. Post the club's race-map link in the club's group chat the night before, and pin it.
  2. List who's racing, with their start times if they differ, so supporters know who to look for.
  3. Point to the find box on the map, for picking out one member in a big field.
  4. Remind members to go live at the start: the map fills up as they do.

On race morning, post the link once more. Supporters who want alerts or to give taps on the back can open a member from the map and follow them.

Can a club do cycling and running?

Yes. A club with races on both Windline and RunFast gets one page at livedot.me with a tab for each sport. It opens on the one that's live, else on cycling.

What about weekly club rides and runs?

livedot is for races. A RunFast club run that isn't a race doesn't go live. Windline's club rides have their own live link, sent from the ride owner's phone with Follow live, which lives on windline.tech, not on livedot. See Windline's Follow live help.

What should supporters know?

That one link covers everyone, that it opens in any browser, and that each member can be followed on their own page too, for alerts and taps. Send them how to get friends and family following you as well, and the name search for members who are Findable.

Something wrong?

Report this club is at the bottom of the club in the app and of its race map. A person looks at every report within 24 hours. Club managers look after their own clubs: they can remove members, and on RunFast block them too.

Is it free?

Yes, for the club, its members and everyone following: it's free for everyone, thanks to ProLend.

Both apps have a demo club on race day: Coast Riders (demo) on Windline, and the RunFast Demo Club at Comrades. Organising a whole event, not just a club? See live tracking for race organisers.

Does the club track its members?

No. The club owns the race; each member owns their dot. Every member goes live from their own phone and chooses who sees them.

How long do finishers stay on the map?

For 6 hours after they finish. The race stays on the club's page all day, then moves to the club's Past list.

What does it cost the club?

Nothing, for the club, its members or anyone following. It's free for everyone, thanks to ProLend.
