About the race
The Mumbai Marathon, run under the title Tata Mumbai Marathon, is an annual road race through India's financial capital. It is widely described as the largest marathon in Asia and the continent's biggest mass-participation sporting event.
History
Procam International, a Mumbai sports management company, launched the race in 2004, taking inspiration from the London Marathon. It began as the Standard Chartered Mumbai International Marathon, and that bank stayed on as title sponsor for fourteen years, until 2017. Tata Group and Tata Consultancy Services took over in 2018. The race has held World Athletics road-race labels at several levels over the years, and it was not run in 2021 or 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Racing resumed on 15 January 2023.
The course
The marathon starts opposite Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. From there it passes Flora Fountain, runs along Marine Drive and past Chowpatty, goes by Haji Ali and Mahim Church, and crosses the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
Distances
Alongside the 42.195 km marathon there is a half marathon of 21.097 km, an open 10K added from the 2018 edition, the 6 km Dream Run, a 4.3 km Senior Citizens' Run and a 2.4 km event for champions with disability. The organiser also lists a virtual run and a separate elite marathon category.
The next edition
The organiser's home page counts down to 17 January 2027. The race has traditionally been held on the third Sunday of January.
Cut-offs and entry
The organiser's site has separate pages for entry rules and regulations, a charity programme with set charity running places, and its race dockets, so check those before planning a trip.
Where to watch
Check the organiser for spectator information. The named landmarks above, from the start near the terminus to Marine Drive and the sea link, are the points along the route that are easiest to identify.
Weather
January falls in Mumbai's cooler season, which runs from December to February. It is also part of a long, nearly rain-free stretch of the year, with the monsoon months coming much later. This is general climate background, not a forecast.
