About the race
The JAL Honolulu Marathon is a road race on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, held on the second Sunday in December. The organiser lists the 2026 race for 13 December 2026, with a 5 am start, and says registration is open.
History
Former Honolulu mayor Frank Fasi organised the first edition in 1973 after watching what the Boston Marathon did for its city. In its early years the field roughly doubled each year, and in 1995 it drew 34,434 entrants and 27,022 finishers, which Wikipedia describes as the largest marathon in the world that year. The race is unusual among American marathons for its popularity with runners from Japan: in 2008, 14,406 of the 23,231 entries came from there. Japan Airlines is the title sponsor.
The course
The route starts near Ala Moana Beach Park, across from Ala Moana Center, and heads west along the waterfront toward downtown Honolulu. It loops through downtown, then turns back east through Waikiki and around Diamond Head. From there it runs out to the eastern suburbs, winding through Hawaii Kai, before doubling back to finish in Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. Wikipedia calls it moderately hard because of tropical conditions and some hills, yet it is still a popular choice for first-time marathoners.
Distances and weekend events
The weekend includes the Start to Park 10K on 13 December 2026 and the Kalakaua Merrie Mile on 12 December 2026. The organiser also runs the Hapalua half marathon in April.
Entry basics
Entry is through the organiser's sign-up page, and the site also offers VIP charity places through partner charities and event transfers. On its Hapalua page the organiser says that, as with the marathon, there is no time limit, only Aloha spirit.
Where to watch
Spectators gather around the start near Ala Moana, along the waterfront and Waikiki, and at the finish in Kapiolani Park. The organiser publishes a traffic advisory and a guide to getting around Oahu during race week.
Weather
December is part of the cooler, wetter season in Hawaii. Race mornings are typically mild and humid before the day warms, and showers are possible; the 2025 race was soaked by rain. Conditions vary, so check the forecast near the date.
