How to find a cycling coach in Cape Town

By livedotUpdated 5 min read

The short answer

Ask livedot in ChatGPT or Claude for "a personal cycling coach near" your suburb, or open livedot.me/coaches for your area. Each coach shows what they coach (road, MTB, gravel, racing, beginners), how (1-on-1, small group, online), their next group session with its weather, and Book / contact. Qualifications are in the coach's own words: ask about them before you book.

  1. Say what you want help with

A first Cape Town Cycle Tour, a faster one, your first MTB stage race, or riding safely in a bunch. Knowing the goal tells you which coach to look for.

  2. Ask livedot, or open the coaches near you

In ChatGPT or Claude with livedot added, ask for "a personal cycling coach near Durbanville" or "an MTB coach in Cape Town". Or open livedot.me/coaches and pick your area.

  3. Pick how you want to be coached

1-on-1, a small training group, or online. Each coach says which they offer, and the group sessions show their day, time and meeting point.

  4. Read their page

See their page opens livedot.me/<their name>: what they coach, their group sessions, who it's for, and the qualifications as they state them.

  5. Book or get in touch

Book / contact opens the coach's own booking or links page. Ask about their qualifications, cost and plan before you start.

  6. Join their group

If the coach runs a training group, Join the group opens Windline, where you sign in or make a free account in the same step.

Cape Town is built for riding: the peninsula loop, Chapman's Peak, the winelands and the trails at Tokai and Jonkershoek. It also has the Cape Town Cycle Tour every March and a wind that can turn an easy ride into a hard one. Plenty of riders want more than a weekend bunch: a plan for a first Cycle Tour or Cape Epic, help on the climbs, or someone to watch their bunch skills before race day. This guide shows how to find a cycling coach or training group near you, and what to look at before you book. More on clubs and races in livedot's guides to finding your people.

Where do I look?

Two places, with the same coaches:

  • In ChatGPT or Claude. Add livedot (livedot.me/mcp) and ask the way you'd ask a friend: "personal cycling trainer in Cape Town", "MTB coach near Tokai", "a cycling training group in the southern suburbs for beginners". livedot lists the coaches nearest first.
  • On livedot.me/coaches. The coaches by area, with the same cards, once coaches near you have listed themselves.

Both show only coaches who listed themselves on Windline and added where they coach. Nobody is listed without asking to be.

How do I choose?

Start from what you want to get better at, not from the coach's list of skills.

  • A first event or a goal time. Look for road or racing, and ask how they plan your weeks to the day. For the Cycle Tour, ask how they prepare riders for the wind on the peninsula.
  • Off-road. MTB or gravel, and ideally group sessions on the trails you'll ride.
  • New to riding in a bunch. Beginners welcome, and a small group that meets near you.
  • A busy week. Online coaching, with one group session a week if they offer it.

Then ask the coach directly. Book / contact opens their own page, so the conversation is theirs, not livedot's. Good questions: what a normal week on their plan looks like, how they adjust it when life gets in the way, what it costs, and the qualifications they list.

Coach, training group or club?

They overlap, and many riders use more than one.

  • A coach, 1-on-1. A plan built around your weeks and your goal, adjusted as you go. It costs the most.
  • A coach's training group. The coach plans for the group, and you ride together at a fixed time each week. Less personal, more company, and usually less expensive.
  • Online coaching. A plan and check-ins by app or message. Good if your week moves around, or you live outside the city.
  • A cycling club. No plan of your own, but a bunch to ride with, routes you'll learn, and people who've ridden the Cycle Tour many times.

Many riders combine a coach's plan with a club's weekend ride. If you do, tell both: a coach plans better when they know which rides are fixed. More in a personal coach or a training group.

What should I ask about the Cape Town Cycle Tour or Cape Epic?

If you're training for one of the big Cape events, ask the coach how many riders they've prepared for it, how they plan the weeks to race day, and how they handle the wind and the climbs (Chapman's Peak and Suikerbossie on the Cycle Tour). The organisers publish the dates, routes and entry rules on their own sites, so check them there before you agree a plan. A good coach will also ask you about your riding so far, your longest recent ride and how many hours a week you really have, before they suggest anything: that conversation tells you a lot about how they'll coach you.

What about safety and health?

A coach plans your training; they aren't your doctor. If you're starting after a long break or have a health condition, speak to a doctor before a new training plan. livedot doesn't make any claim about what coaching will do for your fitness or health.

What if there's no coach near me yet?

livedot only lists coaches who added their area, and the list is new. Ask for a wider area ("cycling coach in the Western Cape" rather than your suburb), try online coaching, or look for a club at livedot.me/clubs or among beginner-friendly cycling groups near you. If you know a coach who'd like to be found, point them to how coaches get found in ChatGPT or straight to List your coaching.

How does the weather on a group session work?

Every group session on livedot shows its weather at the coach's pace. From 10 days out it's the forecast. Before that, it's what that date has usually been like, from 10 years of weather records (Copernicus ERA5, CC BY 4.0), never a forecast. In Cape Town that's worth a look: the south-easter in summer and the cold fronts in winter change which side of the peninsula is the better ride.

Questions

Where can I find a cycling coach in Cape Town?

On livedot.me/coaches, by area, and in ChatGPT or Claude with livedot added: ask for "a cycling coach near" your suburb. Both list the coaches on Windline who listed themselves and added where they coach, nearest first.

Can I get 1-on-1 coaching, or only a group?

Each coach says how they coach: 1-on-1, a small group, online, or a mix. Ask livedot for a "personal cycling coach" to see the 1-on-1 ones first.

Are the coaches' qualifications checked?

No. Each coach states their qualifications in their own words and livedot shows them as theirs. livedot never marks a coach as verified or certified, so ask the coach before you book.

What does it cost to find a coach on livedot?

Nothing. Finding a coach, their page and Book / contact are free, thanks to ProLend. What the coaching costs is between you and the coach.

I'm a coach. How do I get listed?

List your coaching at livedot.me/organisers?as=coach. A person sets up your page; once it's approved you're findable at once.
