About the race
The City2Surf, currently the Voltaren City2Surf, is a 14 km run, jog and walk from central Sydney to Bondi Beach. The organiser calls it the world's largest fun run, and Wikipedia says it has drawn more than 80,000 entrants.
History
The first run was on 5 September 1971, over 9.4 miles from George Street beside Sydney Town Hall. It was conceived by staff at The Sun newspaper and inspired by San Francisco's Bay to Breakers. Of 1,576 starters that day, 1,509 finished inside the 100-minute limit. Since 1973 it has been held on the second Sunday of August, apart from 2000, when the Olympics moved it to July. The 50th anniversary event in 2020 became a virtual run, and the live race returned in 2022. Voltaren took over sponsorship in 2025. The men's course record is 40:03, set by Steve Moneghetti in 1991.
The course
The route leaves the city centre and passes through East Sydney, Kings Cross, Rushcutters Bay, Double Bay, Rose Bay, Vaucluse and Dover Heights before finishing at Bondi Beach. The hardest part is Heartbreak Hill at about halfway, a steep climb of roughly 2 km along New South Head Road from Rose Bay to Vaucluse. Amateur bands play along the way, and many runners wear costumes.
The 2027 edition
The organiser says the race returns on 8 August 2027. The 2026 event sold out for the third year running.
Entry and start groups
Entry is by start group. Wikipedia describes elite wheelchair athletes starting first, then invited seeded runners, then groups based on previous times, then open running and jogging groups, and finally a back-of-the-pack group for walkers, wheelchair users and strollers. The organiser's site has pages on entry prices, start groups, teams and charity fundraising, and says public transport is included. Check the organiser's site for time limits.
Where to watch
The organiser does not set out a spectator map on its home page. Heartbreak Hill and the finish area at Bondi Beach are the best-known points on the course.
Weather
August is winter in Sydney, and winters there are generally mild to cool. Conditions near the coast differ from the western suburbs, as the ocean moderates the weather. This is general background, not a forecast.
