About the race
The Maratón Internacional de Buenos Aires is Argentina's best-known marathon. The organiser promotes it as the fastest race in Latin America and says it has run since 1984, making it one of the larger marathons in the world.
History
Wikipedia says the 21st edition, in October 2005, drew almost 3,000 participants, mostly from Peru, Ecuador and Chile as well as Argentina. The 2009 edition had more than 12,000 runners in the field, with over 6,000 completing the full distance. The 2020 edition was postponed to 2021 because of the pandemic. The organiser's last-edition panel shows a best time of 2:09:04 at the race held on Sunday 21 September 2025.
The course
The organiser's 2026 page gives the start and finish at Avenida Figueroa Alcorta and Dorrego. The 2005 course, as Wikipedia described it, began on Avenida 9 de Julio at Avenida Córdoba in Recoleta. It visited Callao Avenue, the River Plate stadium, Libertador Avenue, Palermo, Corrientes Avenue, Gardel's neighbourhood, Caminito in La Boca, Puerto Madero, the Casa Rosada and the city centre. The current route may differ.
Dates and distances
The organiser lists a 42K and a 21K race. Its page still shows the next edition as Sunday 20 September 2026, with a 7:00 start. Check the organiser for the 2027 date.
Entry and cut-offs
Registration is online through the Ticketear platform, and the organiser publishes a downloadable rulebook that every runner is asked to read before entering. The page gives separate prices for residents of Argentina and for foreign runners. Check the rulebook for time limits.
Where to watch
The race expo is at Parque Sarmiento, with kit collection on Friday 18 September from 11:00 to 20:00 and on Saturday 19 September from 9:00 to 16:00. The start and finish area on Avenida Figueroa Alcorta is the main fixed landmark.
Weather
Buenos Aires has a humid subtropical climate moderated by the Atlantic, and extreme temperatures are rare. The weather can change quickly as the Pampero and Sudestada winds bring contrasting air masses. This is general background for a September race, not a forecast.
