About the race
The TCS Amsterdam Marathon is the annual marathon of the Dutch capital, normally held on the third Sunday of October. It holds a World Athletics Platinum Label and the organiser says it has one of the fastest courses in the world.
History
The first marathon in Amsterdam was run on 5 August 1928 during the Summer Olympics. There was then no international marathon in the city until 3 May 1975, when the first annual race took place as part of Amsterdam's 700th anniversary celebrations. The 1978 edition was cancelled after the sponsor withdrew. Gerard Nijboer won four times in the 1980s, more than any other runner. The race marked its 50th anniversary in 2025, and the organiser's book describes it growing from about 300 runners in 1975 to 60,000 people from 140 countries in 2025, counting all events.
The course
The organiser's page describes a fast route that finishes in the Olympic Stadium. The stadium is open to the public all weekend, and supporters can watch the finish from the stands. Check the organiser's course page for the exact route.
Distances
Three distances run on the race weekend: the 42.195 km marathon, a half marathon of 21.097 km and a 7.5 km race. The programme also has a kids run, mini marathons and other events.
The 2026 race
The edition listed on the organiser's site took place on 18 October 2026, and its results show a new women's course record. The men's record is 2:03:31, set by Geoffrey Toroitich in 2025.
Entry basics
Entry is online through the organiser's registration and prices pages, and a ticket resale option exists. Check the organiser's FAQ for time limits and for the next edition's date.
Where to watch
The Olympic Stadium Fan Zone is the clearest spot: it lets supporters see the finish up close. The organiser also publishes accessibility information for race day, which helps with planning other viewing points on the route.
Weather
October in Amsterdam is autumn. Expect cool, often grey mornings, a chance of showers and wind off the flat, open landscape, so spectators should wear warm, water-resistant layers.
